Baking holidays, life, & school

Hey guys! It’s been way too long since you have heard from me – so sorry about that! Life hit me and hit me hard the past month of so. I’m sure you can all relate, right?

Today I want to talk about goals…and the things that make reaching those goals so very challenging. Like family, for instance. Especially small, although much beloved, grandchildren. As you all know, I recently began a small home based business creating custom sweets. Up until last November, the only people I did this for were my grandchildren and the occasional close family friend.

And then I got ambitious and – at the urging of my family – decided to take the plunge by opening an actual business.

What was I thinking???

Well, let me tell you that everything I was thinking was oh so very wrong, but in a really good “blessings in disguise” kind of way.

My schedule is already pretty full with family obligations and finishing up the last few classes before graduating with my bachelor’s in Creative Writing. However, seeing as I will be a full college graduate as of September 1st, I thought to myself, “Why not start my little baking business now? I mean, it will probably be really slow for a while because, you know, just starting up...”

I figured I would take these few months to build up my customers while focusing mainly on finishing school. Great plan in theory, right? But then reality jumped right on in and provided an overwhelming response to my little start up business. Before I knew it, I was knee deep in orders. Cookies everywhere! Apparently Valentine’s Day really is a big deal in the cookier industry.

Anyway, back to my perfectly adorable grandchildren who, in addition to all those lovely customers, wanted their very own Valentine’s cookies to give to their friends. Who can say no to a child? Especially one of your own family? Not me, for sure.

To make a long story short, I worked about 20 hours a day for almost two weeks. Not just on cookies, but life doesn’t stop just because you over commit yourself so there was homework, errands, bills to pay, laundry to wash, meals to cook. You know, all that life stuff.

And then I came down with the flu. Not just once, but twice. Because that is the way life goes, the disguise part of the blessings.

But I wouldn’t change any of it for the world. Some would say be careful what you ask for because you just may get it. I say be better prepared and don’t shortchange yourself before asking 🙂
